The project

Looking at the retina, catching the damage of diabetes to the eye in time

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults, and it is silent until it is advanced. RetiVista reads a photograph of the back of the eye, taken without drops in a few seconds, and flags the signs of the disease so that people at risk reach an eye doctor in time.

It is a Zannini Group project, developed in-house and in stages: research prototype, then clinical pilot, then quality system and certification. Designed for pharmacies and primary care, diabetes centres and screening programmes.

RetiVista is a research prototype: it is not a medical device and does not provide a diagnosis. Every result must be confirmed by a physician.

Fundus photograph of a healthy retina
How it works
  • 1 · Retina photograph — with a portable fundus camera, no pupil dilation.
  • 2 · Analysis on the spot — the model reads the image and estimates the grade of retinopathy.
  • 3 · Refer / do not refer — a clear indication for the operator, with the photo attached.
